- Abstract:
Biological neural circuits are intricate systems composed of vast numbers of neurons interconnected through enormous, dynamic networks of synapses. These neural circuits regulate neuronal activity, which ultimately drives behavior. My research aims to identify these fundamental structural principles underlying function using connectomics. While existing light microscopy techniques have offered important insights, they leave critical gaps that limit comprehensive circuit analysis. To truly understand how the brain achieves robust computation, it is essential to reconstruct the complete structural map of neurons, known as the connectome. I apply artificial intelligence to 3D electron microscopy to reconstruct all neurons and their synaptic connectivity, enabling mapping from structure to function. With connectome, it becomes feasible to identify how circuit architectures give rise to specific functions. Moreover, through comparative connectomics, it is possible to identify model-specific circuitry to predict model-specific behaviors. In this talk, I will discuss how neural circuit architecture predicts behavioral outcomes in C. elegans and how stage-specific circuit rewiring leads to distinct behaviors of its alternative developmental stage, dauer.
